Sliding on the Cheap! 20"+ New Snow, Resort Updates, Holiday Values, Weekend Weather, Swag, More!

Hello Holiday Sliders!

Yes, we heard that rumor too...the Grinch was planning to drop a
cloud-full of rain after Christmas... Not to worry, dear sliders.
Cold air dropped down and it snowed heavily last night and continues
snowing outside the (secret) mountain hideout of SOTC. Up to 20"
of new snow reported this morning and it's likely that at 7,000
feet, another 10 inches will be on the slopes before morning. The
skiing and riding is fantastic, but make sure to get to your favorite
resort early (it's Christmas holiday, after all) to get the best
groom and avoid parking and lodge congestion.

Mike Pechner, SOTC and KCBS meteorologist says to expect excellent
weather through New Year's with clear skies and cold temperatures
keeping the snow in good shape. Scan the newsletter, pick out a
few choice holiday deals and head on up to Tahoe or Bear Valley!

Ever want a live look-see at I-80 while planning your trip? Surf
to http://magnifeye.com/ and catch a live video feed of westbound
I-80 at Kingvale, as well as other Cal Trans cams. You can also
check road conditions at 1 800 427-7623. Carry chains, dear
sliders--you won't get over the pass without them today.

lift ticket! Save gas money and time. Sugar Bowl is the closest
resort to the Bay Area and Sacramento, avoid all that nasty Lake
Tahoe traffic.

If you're planning a quickie ski or snowboard trip to the high
sierra, plan on Sugar Bowl as your fastest into and out of Tahoe
ski experience Combine that with a high base elevation, you'll have
a great ski or snowboard day.

*Squaw Valley USA
14" to 20+" of new snow with a base of 54-82". Lots of new snow,
especially at the top of the mountain. With clearing skies in the
forecast and light winds, the upper mountain should be in near full
operation tomorrow with plenty of open powder and machine groomed
slopes available. Night Skiing/Riding and High Camp are scheduled
for tonight until 9pm. The Olympic Ice Pavilion at High Camp is
scheduled from 11am-9pm.

Slider's Tips for Squaw:
Get to the mountain early, catch the first tram to High Camp and
get a hour on the upper mountain, almost by yourself.

*Alpine Meadows
Alpine Meadows has received 10 inches of new snow at the base lodge
and 14" at mid mountain snow stake last night. We expect to see
another 6-10" today. Add that to the 20" that dropped last week,
and you'll find Alpine in great condition for the balance of the
holiday week, and into the New Year's holiday.

Locals recommend: Red Green Trail, North-facing side. Great early
morning run due to it's north-facing location. Access off the
Roundhouse chair. (Take a left)

Alpine Meadows at $55 is great value over the holiday!

Slider's holiday tip: When you drive into Alpine, make the first
left turn once reaching the parking lot, then make a quick right.
Park as close to the Tahoe Adaptive Ski School lodge as you can.
Purchase your ticket here--there's generally no line! Ride the
Subway beginner chair and access the mountain from there. They
have a snack bar and if you purchased your lunch at Safeway, you
can almost slide right up to your car for a quickie lunch without
the crowds.

Free Shuttle! Get to and from Alpine Meadows via a free shuttle
from many locations around the Lake. http://www.skialpine.com

*Boreal
Boreal Mountain Resort reports 12 inches of new snow at its base
lodge and 16 inches of new snow at its summit. Still snowing as
we type, which means fresh powder for all skiers and riders this
afternoon and tonight for night skiing.

Slider's Tip: One of the best resorts to learn snowboarding and/or
improve your skills. For the holiday, a high base elevation means
some of the best snowbase in Tahoe and you'll avoid the traffic
woes of Truckee, Tahoe City and the highways around the lake.

Bargain holiday lift ticket price of $44.00! (December 23rd-December
31st). Open for night skiing/riding from 3:30pm-9:00pm seven days
a week. $25.00 for night skiing! Boreal is known for hosting one

Polar Express Opens Saturday- Join us for Christening at 9:15am

e-club header image

ALL-NEW HIGH SPEED QUAD OPENS FOR SEASON

polar express motorhouse
Thanks to a foot of fresh powder, Polar's top motorhouse is now blanketed in snow... Be one of the first to ride, Saturday morning!

Bear Valley’s first High-speed quad will be making it’s inaugural ride to the top of the mountain, marking a significant milestone in Bear Valley’s History.  The Polar Express is among the most significant improvements to the Resort this season providing faster loading, a smoother ride and power redundancy to ensure always-on operation. The new lift replaces Bear Valley’s Hibernation Chair and represents one of the most advanced; environmentally-friendly high speed quad lifts in production, transporting skiers to the summit in less than half the time of the previous lift.

“We’ve been hard at work during the off-season so that our guests can come and have the best time possible at Bear Valley this winter,” said Jim Gentling, general manager of Bear Valley Mountain Resort. “The new lift is a major milestone for Bear Valley and validates the commitment of the new ownership team to revitalize Bear Valley.”

Polar Express christening and ribbon cutting ceremony wills be held at 9:15am on Saturday Dec. 23rd at the bottom of the lift where passengers “load”.

Bear Valley Mountain Resort is operated under special use permit on the Stanislaus National Forest

Sliding on the Cheap! Holiday Ticket Values, Resort Updates, Holiday Tips, Swag, More!

--Twas four nights before Christmas and all through the ski house,
not a creature was stirring, not even the laptop mouse. Every
couch, every chair and even the floor, was littered with sliders,
too tired to snore...

When all of a sudden there arose such a clatter, the fireplace
rocked and the roof seemed to shatter!

She woke with a start and jumped up from the floor; rushed down the
stairs and flew open the door. He stood in the snow, wearing
(Iridium) Verticals and a grin. Decked out in Spyder from toes to
his chin.

"It's Christmas my dear and I'm here without fail. It's SOTC Santa
with Sliding on the Cheap deals, sent to you FREE through email!"
(Don't forget the website at http://www.slidingonthecheap.com)

Hello Holiday Sliders!

We've got you covered, here at SOTC. If you've already got your
trip booked and are looking for insider Tahoe values, we got you
covered. Or, perhaps once you've put all those unwanted gifts on
Ebay, you're gonna have some time to yourself; we got you covered
with (locals) deals for an entire week, or just a day or two of
holiday sliding. Yes, dear sliders, we are jammed packed as usual,
and just because we're feeling generous, we're giving away a
truck-load of swag!

*Buy It Cheap!
Need to purchase that last minute gift? Sports Basement, with three
locations offers 10% off all purchases (in store) to SOTC readers!
Just say you want the "Sliding on the Cheap" discount at checkout.
Where are the stores? Presidio, Sunnyvale and San Francisco!
http://www.sportsbasement.com)

*Slidingonthecheapgear.com!
Closeout gear courtesy of backcountry.com Skis, boards, boots,
clothing, racks...you name it! Limited sizing, but fantastic prices
if you find what you need.

*Verticals!
Purchase Vertical Sunglasses at our Ebay Store! Polarized, Soft
Frames, Iridium Lens, Goggles, Superlight Zero Gravity half frames
and Speed Freeks! http://stores.ebay.com/slidingonthecheap

*Grab Some Egg Nog, Check The Website...
That's right. We can't list everything here. The website at
http://www.slidingonthecheap.com is skier/riders best source of
information on the Tahoe resort community and Darryl has it wired
with Tahoe value...

*Surviving Christmas, SOTC Style!
Over the holidays, try purchasing your lift ticket near home, either
from a ski shop or resort promotional tie-in partner. The Heavenly
deal at Albertsons will save you $15.00 and Costco sells tickets
at a great price with participating resorts.

*Online Purchase? Yes!
Kirkwood offers last year's price on tickets if they're purchased
online. Check your favorite resort to see if they have special
deals for online purchase.

Get the crew out of the house/hotel/motel early! If you arrive at
10:00am, it's a sure bet you're gonna wait in line somewhere. If
you need to rent gear, get to the resort early! Better yet, rent
at Porters Ski & Sport, or other sports shop the night before you
plan to ski or ride.

Take ten minutes and purchase your lunch at Safeway, before heading
to the mountain. Leave it in a locker/car. At the end of the day,
$100 will have magically appeared back in your wallet. The Crew
lives on Safeway Deli Food and we're still alive to tell the tale!

Kids. Kids. Kids. Most Tahoe resorts cater toward families. Find
out who offers free or discounted kids tickets. Squaw Valley for
instance, a world class resort, offers kids 12 and under lift tickets
for just $5.00.

Other resorts, like Northstar, offer world class children's programs,
half and full day that include lunch and snacks. Parent Share
tickets, so parents can trade off skiing and baby-sitting make it
much easier on young families. Alpine Meadows, already a bargain,
has such a ticket. Super Kids Bargain? Try Planet Kids at Soda
Springs!

Okay. You've blown it and forgot to pre-purchase tickets. If
you've planned to ski or ride one resort--purchase a multiday ticket.
That will save time and money. Our favorites include: Diamond Peak,
Squaw Valley, Northstar and Sierra-at-Tahoe.

While Alpine Meadows will have the best (big mountain) price on a
holiday "walk up and purchase" lift ticket, there are other bargains
that might not seem so obvious. Do you need a world-class mountain?
The smaller mountains traditionally offer great value. If you're
a beginner, do you really need 3,000 feet of vertical? Try Boreal,
Homewood, Diamond Peak, Tahoe Donner, Soda Springs and Donner Ski
Ranch for great lift ticket values.

*The Last Minute Getaway!
You've got a few days off...but lodging is booked everywhere around
Lake Tahoe. Try Reno, Carson City, even Boomtown. Reno will have
(cheap) lodging packages that won't require you to give up your
pension for three days of fun...unless you play unlimited Keno.
Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe and Reno create some of the least known, but
best value packages around. Take the shuttle up to Mt. Rose, leave
the car in the lot. http://www.skirose.com to check out these
packages. It's an hour drive from Carson City to Heavenly, but
over the holiday, you'll find lodging deals that are unreal.

*What is Sliding on the Cheap?
The Sliding on the Cheap newsletter is free and is delivered once
a week during the season and twice monthly during the fall! What
will you find? A complete INSIDER guide to skiing and riding Lake
Tahoe's world-class resorts.

Yeah. We freely admit we blew last week's forecast... That storm
took a turn to the south and dropped snow on Vegas, of all places.
Here's what we've got inbound: Light snow inbound today, 4-8 inches
expected at the 7,000 level. You'll need chains Thursday and Friday.
Dry and cold right through Christmas Day, Mike says.
