A Good, Fluffy Start for March

Tons of New Snow... Close to three feet of fresh snow has blanketed Kirkwood Mountain Resort in the past three days; with another two to three feet expected by tomorrow evening – it's going to be a huge powder weekend! Very low snow levels mean skiers and riders can find 2,300 acres of incredibly diverse terrain, all buried in tons of fresh, dry snow. Kirkwood has received 261-435 inches of snow season to date, and boasts base depths of 132-230 inches.

Visit www.kirkwood.com or call 1-877-KIRKWOOD for more information and for the latest on snow conditions, as well as resort operations and road conditions.

All three terrain parks are open with features for all levels - gentle rollers and banked turns in Adventureland (Chair 9), low to the snow rails and fun boxes in the DC Playground (Chair 7) with a fun new halfpipe close by, and a full blown rail yard and a series of high flying hits in the DC Stomping Grounds (Chair 5).

Cross Country and Snowshoe

Scenic Outdoor Fun... 80K of groomed double track with skating and snowshoe lanes to the top of the trail system, with the most diverse and picturesque terrain in the High Sierra. There is a Soup and Shoe this Sunday (3/5) – a fun snowshoe romp that provides incredible views of the High Sierra, along with hearty soup to soothe the soul. Call (209) 258-7248 for info.

Upcoming Events & Expeditions, 3/11/06

Six Summit Peak Persuit... On Saturday, March 11th, Kirkwood is proud to present the Marmot Six Summit Peak Pursuit, part of the 2006 Life-Link Ski Mountaineering Race Series. Advanced backcountry skiers and riders will test their limits in the ultimate ski tour of the season. Participants will race up and down the mountain as they set out to bag the six peaks that punctuate Kirkwood's ridgeline. For more information, visit life-link.com.

Backcountry Celebration... Next weekend will be a big, backcountry festival weekend, with a host of other programs awaiting those looking to get off the beaten trail: Daily Conditions Clinics, Full Moon Cross Country Ski/Snowshoe Tour, Beacon Basin Transceiver Training Area, Ridgeline Snowshoe Trek, Backcountry Awareness Clinic, Steeps Camps for skiers and riders, equipment demos, info booths and more! For more information call (209)258-7406.

Echo to Kirkwood... Also on March 11th is the 35th Annual Echo to Kirkwood Tour and Race – Skiers will journey across 13 miles of stunning Sierra scenery on a well-marked backcountry route. The trail begins at Echo Summit and crosses the Sierra Crest to finish at the Kirkwood Cross-Country and Snowshoe Center. The race begins at 10 a.m. at the Echo Summit SnoPark. Log onto ednsp.org for information.

Master Plan for Upgrades

We are nearing the end of the public comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the 2003 Mountain Master Development Plan (MMDP). Members of the public are encouraged to submit comments to the Forest Service, supportive comments as well as constructive criticism are welcome. All comments must be postmarked by Monday, March 6. The entire document can viewed at http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado.

The master plan, an effort of the USFS and Kirkwood Mountain Resort, will comply with specific provisions of Kirkwood’s Forest Service permit and will aid long range planning efforts. All proposed upgrades and improvements will take place on lands located within the existing Forest Service permit. “Providing quality recreation opportunities is an important goal for the Forest Service,” says Amador District Ranger Jane LaBoa. “The planned improvements, if implemented over the next five to eight years, will result in a more enjoyable experience for the recreating public.”

The plan is designed to enhance the recreational experience at Kirkwood by upgrading and improving the lift and terrain network; on-mountain guest services; snowmaking coverage; infrastructure; and non-skiing or riding activities.

Please take a moment to express your comments on the MMDP no later than Monday, March 6 by emailing the Forest Service at srodman@fs.fed.us. Please include your full name, mailing address, and whether or not you want to receive a copy of the final EIS and Record of Decision.

Your comments can be as brief or lengthy as you like. If you have any questions you’d like to ask prior to writing, feel free to contact us at info@kirkwood.com or call us at (209) 256-6000.
