BV Sessions Slopestyle - March 8thSpring Into Bear Valley Events

Spring is well on it's way and we've been lavishing the sunny weather. 2008 couldn't have brought better conditions - with more than 18 feet of snow in January and February, conditions are set for the rest of the season. The spring sun brings lots of activities around the mountain and this weekend is no exception. March kicks off with competitions on the mountain and at the trails.

For those looking to fine tune some park skills are maybe even learn some new ones, our free Progression Session park clinic will get you stylin' in no time. After picking up some new skills, test them out against other BV riders at our BV Sessions Slopestyle Comp. With a $1500 cash purse plus lots of prizes to give away, there's plenty of chances to pick up some sweet new swag.

Registration for both events will happen on the day. Helmets are required and if you're under 18, you need a parent's release.

35th Annual Bjornloppet Comes to Bear Valley Cross Country

On Saturday March 8th cross country skiers from near and far will assemble in the Bear Valley Meadow for the 35th running of the Bjornloppet Ski Race and Festival. With a 10:30 am start, The Bjornloppet, meaning Bear Race in Norwegian, is enjoyed by young and old alike. There are divisions for all ages and two distances are offered, 20 kilometers (two laps) and 10 kilometers. The mass start is fun to watch with the go-fast racers using the ski skating technique. The course winds through aspen trees, over some roller coaster terrain and ends up on the Bjornloppet Trail with its’ notorious Bjornloppet Downhill. Thrills and spills are part of the racing game as the race can be won or lost on this section alone. After the race is over, skiers will gather at Headwaters for an outrageous awards ceremony with tons of prizes from Salomon, Clif Bar, Patagonia, and many of the local merchants. The buzz is that it pays to play at this race as 1st through 3rd in all age classes are awarded prizes.

Saturday is the main event but on Sunday March 9th a second day of racing is offered up for striders (classic skiers only – no ski skaters). This 10 Kilometer event starts at 10:00 am, features a different course and is followed up by a nice awards party with prizes as well.

The events are hosted by Bear Valley Cross Country, which is reporting excellent mid winter ski conditions.

*Mike Pechner's SnowCast!
A storm system moving south out of Canada into the Great Basin
produced cold, gusty northeasterly winds yesterday in the Sierra and
the highs were only in the 30's  to low 40's about a 10  degree drop
from earlier in the week.  Winds will ease today and under sunny skies
temperatures will rebound a few degrees each day into the weekend. It
now appears that any weather system next week will probably be pretty
weak.
Earliest possibility of any significant snow is not likely to the end
of next week when forecast models show a cold storm from the Gulf of
Alaska headed for the Sierra.   Otherwise look for excellent spring conditions
for boarders and skiiers in the meantime.
Mike Pechner

*Corn Grows at Alpine Meadows!
Alpine Meadows boasts some of the best spring snow in the Sierra.
The mountain staff patiently waits for snow to complete
a sufficient multi-day freeze/melt process:
snow surface warms and becomes smooth during the day;
the smooth layer freezes at night) before opening for skiing and riding.
The reward:  Perfectly smooth corn snow runs...

Alpine maintains its flawless corn snow by adopting a
“follow the sun” ski philosophy. During the warm spring days,
terrain opens and closes throughout the depending upon
when they're kissed by the sun.

Live music every Saturday on the sundeck, and unique spring events
 – including the Annual Snow Golf Tournament and Mad Cow Downhill
 – are perfect compliments to Alpine’s beautiful spring terrain.
