| BEAR VALLEY OPENING DAY PROJECTED FOR DECEMBER 15TH With winter storms in the forecast for this weekend and well into next week, Bear Valley is now projecting Friday, December 15th for opening day! (Weather & conditions permitting). "Our ski area rests its reputation on a quality product and we intend to preserve that reputation,” Jim Gentling, Chief Operating Officer, stated. A few more good storms should enable the resort to open with Kuma and Cub lifts. The new Polar Express will open as conditions permit. When Bear Valley Mountain Resort does open for the season, it will be ready to move skiers and boarders around the mountain more efficiently with its first major on-mountain improvement in 33 years. The Polar Express, with a capacity of 2400 people per hour, almost triples the uphill capacity of the old lift.
GET YOUR GEAR ON Bear Valley’s on-mountain retail shop, Reba Sports is currently open daily, from 9am to 4pm. Reba Sports features 06/07 product lines including the underwear phenomenon Under Armor, with Dragon eyewear, Foursquare Outerwear and Smith Helmets. In addition, bring your skis and snowboards to the Bear Valley Repair Shop for a little pre-season TLC. A full-tune is the way to plan for optimum performance from your equipment, or bring your new skis, snowboards, and bindings in to be mounted. The Repair Shop is open from Friday through Sunday (pre-season) from 9am-4pm.
WINTER SPORTS HISTORY NIGHT The Ebbetts Pass Historical Association plans to honor Bob Shedd & Roy Miller. The public is invited to a free party at the Bear Valley Lodge for the annual Winter Sports History Night, December 9, 7pm. The Ebbetts Pass Historical Association will honor the late Bob Shedd with the Peter Brinkman Award for outstanding contribution to winter recreation in the Ebbetts Pass area. Shedd was the first ski patrol leader for the brand new Mt. Reba ski area in 1967, and later became the Mountain Manager. He developed policies and procedures and elevated ski patrolling to a new height of professionalism. He was a co-founder of the western professional ski patrollers’ association, establishing standards and credential testing. He was also a talented artist. He created the first trail maps for the new ski area and made many of the on-hill signs. He also carved the entrance sign and wooden bears for the Bear Valley village entrance. EPHA will also honor the late Roy Miller and his family, the founders of the Cottage Springs Ski Area. Roy, like Shedd, was a man of many talents who helped bring civilization to the Ebbetts Pass area, as a real estate developer, road builder, equipment operator, and creator of the popular ski and snow play area at Cottage Springs. There is hardly a subdivision from Bear Valley to Angels Camp that doesn't bear the stamp of the industrious Miller family, of which Roy was the patriarch.
