*How to Find Solitude Over The Holiday!

Yes, dear sliders, it can be tough finding
your own little slice of heaven during a ski and snowboard
holiday, especially one with good snow like this year.
Here are some inside tips from the SOTC crew on
slopes and lifts that don't attract a crowd. Use our insider
tips, you'll slide more runs in an hour than many will
in an entire day... Remember..it's a secret!

*Northstar-at-Tahoe
Lookout Mountain. The groomed runs hold about the same
challenge as the backside, but you'll find a fraction of
the crowd. Best known for tree skiing under the chair
when weather permits.

*Sugar Bowl
Overland off of Disney for Intermediate,
off of Mt. Judah, try Pacific Crest Trail!

*Diamond Peak
Luggis Run off of Crystal Express,

all the way to Stagecoach, it's like 8,600 feet long!

(Day ticket holders can put it towards a season pass at the
end of the day (at the Cal Lodge only).

*Kirkwood
Chair 4, Sunrise is famous for finding
powder stashes, (backside) over a busy holiday.

*Squaw Valley USA

Solitude
Broken Arrow

To avoid lines on popular lifts but access the same terrain, take:
Squaw One instead of the Funitel or Cable Car
High Camp Chair instead of East Broadway
Newport instead of Siberia
Mainline instead of Gold Coast
Cornice II (if running) instead of Headwall
Olympic Lady (if running) instead of KT22

To drive right up and park your car next to a lift and avoid base
area traffic and lines, park next to the Far East lift and purchase
your lift ticket at the Far East ticket windows.

Sliding on the Cheap! Best Holiday Sliding in Two Years, Deals, Discounts, SOTC Crew Tips, Sliding Santa, More!

--Twas five nights before Christmas and all through the ski house,
not a creature was stirring, not even the laptop mouse.  Every
couch, every chair and even the floor, was littered with sliders,
too tired to snore...

When all of a sudden there arose such a clatter, the fireplace
rocked and the roof seemed to shatter!

She woke with a start and jumped up from the floor; rushed down the
stairs and flew open the door.  He stood in the snow, wearing
(Iridium) Verticals and a grin.  Decked out in Spyder from toes to
his chin.

"It's Christmas my dear and I'm here without fail.  It's SOTC Santa

region's most popular children's arena, including a Tube Carousel
and Moving Carpet and ski/snowboard equipment all for just $15 -
kids love it!  http://www.skisodasprings.com

*Surviving Christmas, SOTC Style!
Over the holidays, try purchasing your lift ticket near home, either
from a ski shop or resort promotional tie-in partner.  The Heavenly
deal at SaveMart is an example and Costco sells tickets at a great
price with participating resorts, including Diamond Peak.  Check
REI for lift ticket discounts in the Bay Area.

*Holiday Sliding Tips!
Get the crew out of the house/hotel/motel early!  If you arrive at
10:00am, it's a sure bet you're gonna wait in line somewhere.  If
you need to rent gear, get to the resort early!  Better yet, rent
at one of the local ski shops, night before you plan to slide.

Take ten minutes and purchase your lunch at Safeway, before heading
to the mountain.  Leave it in a locker/car.  At the end of the day,
$100 will have magically appeared back in your wallet.  The Crew
lives on Safeway Deli Food and we're still alive to tell the tale!

Kids.  Kids.  Kids.  Most Tahoe resorts cater toward families.  Find
out who offers free or discounted kids tickets.  Squaw Valley for
instance, a world class resort, offers kids 12 and under lift tickets
for just $10.00, valid over the holiday.

Other resorts, like Northstar-at-Tahoe, offer world class children's
programs, half and full day that include lunch and snacks.  "Parent
Share" tickets, so parents can trade off skiing and baby-sitting
make it much easier on young families.  Alpine Meadows, already a
bargain, has such a ticket.  Super Kids Bargain?  Try Planet Kids
at Soda Springs!

Okay.  You've blown it and forgot to pre-purchase tickets.  If
you've planned to ski or ride one resort--purchase a multiday ticket.
That will save time and money.  Our favorites include:  Diamond Peak,
Squaw Valley and Sierra-at-Tahoe's 3 Pak.

While Alpine Meadows will have the best (big mountain) price on a
holiday "walk up and purchase" lift ticket, there are other bargains
that might not seem so obvious.  Do you need a world-class mountain?
The smaller mountains traditionally offer great value.  If you're
a beginner, do you really need 3,000 feet of vertical?  Try Boreal,
Homewood, Diamond Peak, Tahoe Donner, Soda Springs and Donner Ski
Ranch for great lift ticket values.

*The Last Minute Getaway!
You've got a few days off...but lodging is booked everywhere around
Lake Tahoe.  Try Reno, Carson City, even Boomtown.  Reno will have
(cheap) lodging packages that won't require you to give up your
pension for three days of fun...unless you play unlimited Keno.
Mt.  Rose-Ski Tahoe and Reno create some of the least known, but
best value packages around.  Take the shuttle up to Mt.  Rose, leave
the car in the lot.  http://www.skirose.com/ to check out these
packages.  It's an hour drive from Carson City to Heavenly, but
over the holiday, you'll find lodging deals that are unreal.

*What is Sliding on the Cheap?
The Sliding on the Cheap newsletter is free and is delivered once
a week during the season and twice monthly during the fall!  What
will you find?  A complete INSIDER guide to skiing and riding Lake
Tahoe's world-class resorts.

Yeah.  Sure.  We got cheap tickets, hotel, lodging, food ...  but
we've also got the best up to date scoop on Tahoe happenings--anywhere
on the planet.  To sign-up (or drop) go to

Yes, and we give away FREE lift passes, (and swag) to SOTC readers

http://www.slidingonthecheap.com/ to sign up for any one of our
cherished FREE email blasts...

*Mike Pechner's Snowcast
Sierra resorts put their Christmas Wish list to Santa several
weeks ago and it took him until this week to fill
the order.  He is making another run thru the Sierra today with another
4 to 10" of new snow to add to the 8 to 18" that fell overnight on  the
slopes.  Some areas are reporting up to a 5 feet pack. The current
storm ends tonight with col, dry weather Friday thru Sunday.  We could
see a weak front with some light snow for Christmas Eve.  Beyond that
the is another storm late next week. Boarders and skiers will find
powder and pack powder on all runs this weekend.  Lows -5 to 10 above
and Highs 20's and low 30's.

Sliding on the Cheap! $35 Northstar & Squaw Valley Tixs, More Snow, Sugar Bowl Core, Updates, Freebies, More!

Hello Sliders!

Okay, it's a whole new ball game, dear sliders, as heavy snow fell
last week in the High Sierra allowing most resorts to get open, and
those already open to groom out and open new terrain.  Most resorts
are still operating on a limited basis and with a discount ticket,
but with new snow in the forecast and cold, (really cold) temperatures
in Tahoe, expect to find most resorts near full operation by the
end of next week.

Deals, you ask?  Of course!  We've got $35 lift tickets at
Northstar-at-Tahoe and Squaw Valley!  Northstar to celebrate 35
years of operation and Squaw's annual Community Benefit Day!  These
tickets are limited and will sellout, so make sure to check details
below, then order right away if you want the one-time bargain price.
What else?  Sugar Bowl's Core Card allows you to ski or ride monster
vertical for just $50; Sierra-at-Tahoe, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, and
Alpine Meadows hosting discount tickets; purchase a pair of our
VERTICAL sunglasses and get a voucher allowing you to purchase a
$51 lift ticket at (lovely) Northstar-at-Tahoe!

*Celebrate 35 Years of Northstar Resort!
35th day of operation you can celebrate 35 Years of Northstar Resort
by purchasing a $35 lift ticket!  Discounted lift tickets are valid
on December 21, 2007 only and are only available online through
December 20, 2007.  Tickets are non-refundable and have no cash
value.  Please bring your receipt to the Northstar Resort Ticket
and Season Pass Office or any Ticket window to pick up lift ticket.
Celebrations for Northstar Resort's 35th anniversary continues with
an apres ski party in the Village with drink specials, birthday
cake and live music featuring songs from the 1972 era!
http://www.northstarattahoe.com/

*TELEPACIFIC Wants to Send You Sliding Northstar/Sierra FREE!
Check it out at http://www.telepacific.com/ski

*Are you looking for gear and live in the Sacramento area?
Slider Discount!  Get up to 40% off snowboarding gear at all four
Ground Zero locations.  Visit http://www.groundzeroboardshop.net/

*The Tahoe Biltmore Hotel & Casino
The SOTC home, away from home.  We love it.  Great north shore
location fantastic rates and Breakfast included!  Prices start at
just $39 a night.  http://www.tahoebiltmore.com/

Need a webcam  or video fix?  make sure to check out
tahoetopia.com.  Eric has it cooking with up-to-date
video from around Tahoe and it's one stop shopping for
Tahoe cams.

*The Skinny
Heavy snow last week opened many resorts, or allowed then to open
to the top, providing for pretty good early season sliding.  That's
not all.  Mike Pechner says we've got snow on the way early next
week, enough to ensure that Christmas sliders will have plenty of
skiing and riding.

Do you have your holiday reservations?  Don't wait, dear sliders
as lodging will get scarce, just as it does every holiday.  If
you're looking for lodging, and want a bargain, try the Tahoe
Biltmore Hotel & Casino, http://www.tahoebiltmore.com, or Cal Neva
at http://www.calnevaresort.com/ on the Northshore and The Lakeside
Casino Hotel on southshore, http://www.lakesideinn.com/

Don't forget Reno!  It's a 45 minute drive, but with Tahoe lodging
at high season, it'll be a bargain on comparison, and many will
have discount tickets to boot!  If you're planning Reno, Mt. Rose-Ski
Tahoe and Diamond Peak are natural choices, given their proximity
to Casino hotels.

*Floating Ticket Prices
Almost every resort in Tahoe is using a sliding scale for ticket
prices.  That means the holiday prices will be higher than non-holiday,
and in some cases, midweek can be a real bargain.  Our suggestion?
Get some friends together and purchase corporate tickets, if they're
still available.  They are a BARGAIN and most are valid over the
holidays.

*Boreal
A great choice for early season lessons, or learn to ski/ride.  Why,
you ask?  Short commute from the bay area, experts in snowmaking
and early season grooming, fully staffed on opening day, so plenty
of instruction available.  http://www.rideboreal.com/

*Soda Springs
We always get asked for locations that host value Snow Play Zones,
as well as skiing and riding.  Great value in Tahoe is Soda Springs,
with an $18.00 all day tubing pass.  http://www.skisodasprings.com/

*Sports Basement and SOTC Means Saving Big $$$$$ For Christmas!
On Brands Like: Atomic, Salomon, Dynastar, Nordica, Burton and Ride!

Beanies!  Orange Flame and Flaming Skulls!
http://stores.ebay.com/slidingonthecheap

Purchase Verticals or Beanies, get a free voucher that is valid at
Northstar/Sierra for the purchase of a $51 lift ticket!  Valid at
Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.  AVAILABLE
DATES: Vouchers will be valid from season opening through November
22; November 25-December 21, 2007; January 2-18, 2008, and March
17 through the end of the 2008 season.

*Mike Pechner SnowCast!
Highs temperatures remain around 32 with little or no melting while
overnight lows continue in the teens.  Little change is expected
into the weekend with cold nights ideal for snow making with daytime
highs in the 30s.  Another pattern change early next week will
place the jet stream in a north-south configuration from the Gulf
of Alaska into the Sierra which should translate into several strong
storms producing plentiful snows on several days next week.  (could
that mean deeeeeep snow?)

The Sliding on the Cheap newsletter is FREE, FREE, FREE!   Delivered

Sliding on the Cheap! Alert! Storm Dumps on Sierra, Diamond Peak--SOTC Value Family Favorite!

Hello Sliders!

Yes, indeed, Mike Pechner nailed it! Tahoe has been dumped on,
even beyond our expectations!  This will truly be the opening ski/snowboard
weekend, with up to 30+ inches of fresh snow already being groomed
to world-renowned perfection.  Check www.slidingonthecheap.com
for updates!

* Diamond Peak, SOTC Value Favorite For Families!
As our regular readers know, I like to send out my "Best Of" Lake Tahoe
resort recommendations as the season gets underway, with special
emphasis on the little gems that locals know, but rarely get an opportunity
to share. While we love to rage over blistering steep vertical and
monster terrain park features, family resorts are the backbone
of the ski industry and one of the best, but lesser known is located
at Incline Village, named Diamond Peak.  (Diamond Peak
is planning to open December 13th, just ahead of the holiday ski
and snowboard season.)

"With a wide range of terrains, Diamond Peak enables skiers of all levels
to enjoy the spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. Skiers can take full
advantage of the scenery by riding the Lakeview Quad lift, featuring
fantastic views on the ascent, and making this precious gem worth every cent.
Of course, skiers will enjoy the mountain's excellent trails, and the excitement
Lake Tahoe has to offer. As one TripAdvisor traveler said,
"Weekends are never crowded, and during the week, you'll feel
guilty that they are running the lift just for you."

The SOTC crew feels the same way.  If you're looking for a fantastic
mountain, that caters toward families, yet has something for skiers
and riders of every level, Diamond Peak certainly will not disappoint,
and that doesn't even include the $48.00 all day adult lift pass,
one of the best bargains in all Tahoe.

What Makes Diamond Peak So Kid Friendly?"
Scan down, dear sliders...

Bee Ferrato Child Ski Center 20 years into business  (ages 3-7)
Low ski instructor to children ratio, 1 to 5 max
Surface lift
Safe environment
Background check for employees
All runs funnel into the Base Area
Beginner friendly “progression” Burton terrain park
$48 interchangeable parent’s pass
Great programs for children 3 -12 years old
Sierra Scout All Day Adventure Program 7-12 years old
Diamond Pete Private Lessons Special 3-7 years old
Supervised Lunches
Pre and post lesson supervised time with the children
Safety measures for signing out children
Hot Chocolate

*Deals, Deals and Deals!
We can't list all of Diamond Peak's ongoing deals, you'll have to check the SOTC
website for everything, but here are a few of our favorites!

The Mini –Pass – ski for 2, 3, 5 or 7 days – any days you want,
the only transferable pass in Tahoe and in the US, the more
you ski the more you save. Prices start at just $85.00.

*3 for Free!
The 3 for FREE program is new at Diamond Peak for the 2007/2008 season!
Buy three lesson packages up front for any skill level and upon completion
of your third lesson you receive three free lift tickets (up to $144 value!),
valid any day during the 2007/08 season. Lesson packages include a group
ski or snowboard lesson of 1 hr 45 min group lesson, standard rental
equipment and lift ticket with access to the lifts of your level.
Upgrades are available for purchase. The whole package is worth $159.

Diamond Peak wants to reward you for getting out on the slopes
and learning how to ski or snowboard, so they're offering three FREE
lift tickets upon completion of your lessons.
You must mention this offer at any ticket window to receive the special price.

*Beginner Pass!
$109 Beginner Pass good for the Lodgepole and Schoolhouse chairs.
Take turns watching the kids with the $48 Interchangeable Parent’s Pass!

*Lodging!
Incline Village has tons, from the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, to
(our favorite) The Tahoe Biltmore Hotel and Casino located just minutes
away, by far the best hotel value in Tahoe.

How About If We Send A Few Of Our Readers To Diamond Peak!

Sliding on the Cheap! Sierra Winter Storm Warning, $25 Learn To Slide Weekend, Tixs, Lodging, More!

He's been glued to his desk, for days without food, not wanting to miss a
change in the atmospheric mood.  Suddenly without warning, the satellite dish
shakes; the weather room rolls like it has been hit with a quake.  With quivering
hands and a wide beaming smile, Mike Pechner dials my number from his
"Call-If-New-Snow-Is-On-The-Way" file.
"It seems like a year, but I'm out of my slump!  Grab
your new boards, it's going to dump!"

Hello Sliders!

We're all in the same boat, dear sliders, waiting to see if the
inbound storm will dump enough snow to significantly impact resorts
for the weekend.  Mike Pechner, our meteorologist, tells me this
is a significant system, with up to two feet of snow above the 8,000
foot level, with six to ten inches at lake level.  That's his
story...and he's sticking to it.  Make sure to read Mike's SnowCast
below, if you want to bring a smile to your face.

Learn to Ski/Ride on the Northshore.  Happens this weekend, learn
to ski or ride for just $25.00.  We suggest getting to the resorts
EARLY, since these events can be busy, given the fantastic price for first
timers.  However!  You'd best call to check with your favorite
